Dedication Recital for Steinway Piano Gift

October 25, 2013 (Notre Dame, Ind.)—Saint Mary’s College is pleased to announce the gift of a Steinway & Sons Model D Concert Grand Piano to the College’s Department of Music by Louise E. Addicott and Yatish J. Joshi to honor their daughter Georgina. To celebrate, Saint Mary’s College will host a dedicatory recital introducing the piano to the community. Performing will be music professor and concert pianist Jeffrey Jacob. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14 in Little Theatre of Moreau Center for the Arts. The event is open to the public and free of charge. A reception will follow the event. Joshi is expected to attend.
In a letter to the College about the gift, Joshi shared Louise’s vision for young musicians and singers to have educational, career development, and performance opportunities and expressed his hope that the grand piano “inspires students to greater heights in their music education and musical careers.” The instrument will be named “Georgina” in tribute to Georgina and her love of all types of music, whether she was performing solo or in an ensemble, or sitting in an audience listening to a performance. Joshi recalled that she performed at Saint Mary’s after graduating from Royal College of Music and with the South Bend Chamber Singers, of which she was a part for several years. The couple’s gift to Saint May’s also includes the rebuilding of the College’s existing Steinway.
“We are thrilled with the donation of this wonderful instrument to our Department of Music,” said Nancy Menk, professor and chair of the department. “Our students will benefit from the Joshis’ generosity for years to come. Georgina was a superb singer, and now our singers have an excellent instrument bearing her name to accompany them in rehearsal and performance.”
Jacob has played for audiences from Hong Kong to Dublin and all over the U.S. Two of his most memorable performances were forays into Warsaw, Poland, before the fall of communism. Jacob has composed three symphonies, three piano concertos, and numerous works for piano and chamber ensemble. He obtained his master’s degree at Juilliard and his PhD from the Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University.
